Which style of riding is more expensive to pursue when considering the costs of boarding, training, tack, clothing and other expenses; English or Western?
I think that it would depend if you had a horse or not too. Aren't Western saddles generally more expensive than English ones?

It honestly depends on what you pursue in each seat. For example, with western you could do roping, reining, barrel racing, other rodeo events, and western pleasure. With western pleasure the outfits you must wear get updated frequently so you'll spend more on outfits versus english hunters, jumpers, dressage, 3 day eventing where the show attire remains mostly the same. So it just depends on what you decide to pursue. I have shown in almost all seats, yes including saddleseat and just depends.

I would have to say they are both about even in the long run. I am not quite understanding why people put boarding is more expensive for an english horse. At the barn we ride at, there are both english western horses and they all get treated the same way. All get groomed alike, fed the same hay drink the same water.
So, my vote is a tie. :D

Western. All of you English people are pretty much saying Western is for low class trail ponies. It's not. If you show in the circles I do, Like Western Pleasure, Your looking at 4.000$+ saddles, show shirts that sell for 3.000$, Then Chaps, (depending on how nice you get them) You're looking at 500$, Hats, 200$, and boots. 100$-2.000$. If your showing Showmanship, your halters are going for 350$+, Barrel Racing you're looking at 2k and 3k saddles, probably a 7k entire tack set, then you have to buy leg wraps, (About 120$)
It really depends what type you show. I think they are both pretty equal, but I can agree with everyone on one thing, if you wanna go to the top, you have to lay down cash.

id say english just a tad more cause the saddles im used to seeing in the shop are 800$ up to 2000$. but then again western can get up to 3000$ in my area. bridles are the same price all around. so id probaly still say english cause it is more money for the agisting, boarding and the new tack once it gets worn. so english it is.

Western... Show saddles cost $5000+ some are less but they aren't as Nice....Show Brides and everything is $100's Endernece saddles for the 100+ milers want to get the $1000+.....
So yea I have to say western.. +) But I ride with just A Bridle and my helmet so it only cost me $100 not counting the saddle i do own.

I LOVE ENGLISH RIDING! THE SADDLE LOOKS AWSOME ON A GOOD HORSE! AND IF U PEOPLE PUT A WESTERN SADDLE ON A PRETTY HORSE IT WONT LOOK AS GOOD AS IT WOULD WITH AN ENGLISH ONE! and they look more decent, nice sturups, and its tottaly better!LOL

English - there are so many different types of tack! Saddles mostly - general/all purpose, dressage, jumping, endurance, showing, polo, the list goes on! And that's just saddles - there are three types of bridle single, double and bitless. But there are also bits, rugs, boots etc that you don't use in western and the competition clothing is very expensive!

I voted for English because:I think it's a lot more comfurable,I think the horses like it better because they don't have to lug it around, and you have better control over a horse in English!
